Getting to Sicily will not be difficult, it is one of the few regions of Italy to have 4 airports from which many national and international low cost flights take off and land. Among the latest airlines that have scheduled flights to Palermo, Catania and Comiso since October 2020, you will find WizzAir and Ryanair with really advantageous fares starting from only 9.99 euros each way.
Landed at the airport, you can rent a car for the entire duration of your holiday in Sicily by taking advantage of the many offers of the rental cars companies and reach your holiday location (for convenience we recommend you to book before your departure). Naturally, we are biased: for your winter sun holidays in Sicily, book one of our wonderful Luxury Villas.
After having rested and having taken a nice regenerating bath, perhaps in one of the swimming pools of our villas (in Sicily it is possible to swim outdoors even in winter), you will be spoiled for choice on the wonderful destinations to visit in Eastern Sicily or in Western Sicily.
What to see in Western Sicily in winter
ou can start your tour in Sicily by visiting Palermo, the Ballarò market and the wonderful Palatine Chapel inside the oldest royal palace in Europe: Palazzo dei Normanni. Then reach the Quattro Canti, stop at the Fontana Pretoria and enter the Cathedral of Palermo and before leaving for Monreale, to visit the Arab-Norman Cathedral with its spectacular Byzantine mosaics, stop for lunch in one of the many restaurants in the city of Palermo to taste the typical dishes of Sicilian cuisine. If lunch has not exhausted you, you can also decide to continue to Cefalù, a wonderful town east of Palermo just over an hour's drive. There, you will find the majestic Cathedral of Cefalù, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015, the Norman Cathedral flanked by two soaring towers, built in front of an imposing and suggestive rocky wall and overlooking Piazza Duomo. Going further down, the wonderful beach of Cefalù, overlooking a crystalline sea where you can dive into the most beautiful days of autumn and early winter, and where you will be able to enjoy a romantic and suggestive sunset.
We could continue to tell you more about Western Sicily, there are so many beautiful things to see. But now let's move to the other side of the island, we will accompany you to the eastern area of Sicily, the southern most area of Italy.
Holidays in Eastern Sicily: what to see in winter.
An enchanting corner of Sicily, dominated by the highest volcano in Europe: Etna sung by philosophers and poets, called by the people of Catania "a muntagna" and admired by tourists and scholars from all over the world. A unicum that makes this part of Sicily even more precious, a show that you can see in activity while admiring the incredible (and not rare) lava flows during the Sicilian nights. And within easy reach, beautiful cities. Taormina, a renowned tourist destination from which you can enjoy an unforgettable show from its panoramic terrace facing the Gulf of Catania. From there, taking the cable car, you can go down to the Isola Bella beach and enjoy this spectacular coastline and its imposing stacks. Then Catania, regal and kaleidoscopic. A thousand and more things to see in this city: the Cathedral of Sant'Agata, the Elephant Fountain, Piazza Duomo, Teatro Massimo, the Benedictine Monastery of Nicolò l'Arena, Villa Bellini and many, many Baroque views on the facades of the marvelous 17th and 18th century architecture, stately homes clad in lava stone juxtaposed, in stark contrast, with the whiteness of the white stone of the Sicilian tuff quarries. For nature lovers, the Alcantara Gorges and the climbs of Mount Etna are unmissable.
Syracuse is another unmissable destination in South Eastern Sicily, as well as the magical and romantic island of Ortigia that will make you fall in love with the Castle of Maniace, the Fonte Aretusea, the Temple of Apollo, the Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia and the spectacular Cathedral in Piazza Duomo. A truly unique city, overlooking the sea, a destination where you can enjoy lunches and dinners based on fish and km0 products, immersed in an intimate and surreal atmosphere. Not to be missed is a visit to the Greek Theater of Syracuse, the Archaeological Park of Neapolis and to the Ear of Dionysus.
Pushing further south, you will find yourself in a spectacular setting. Val di Noto and its historic cities: Noto, Scicli, Ispica, Modica, Ragusa Ibla to name a few. Cities that will welcome you with all their royal Baroque architecture of the late seventeenth century. An unforgettable landscape, pearl of the Sicilian Baroque, UNESCO heritage since 2002, a few kilometers from the Mediterranean coast dotted with typical seaside villages. Marzamemi, Portopalo di Capo Passero, Scoglitti, Sampieri, Cava D’aliga, Punta Secca. Ancient fishing villages, custodians of the Sicilian tradition linked to fishing and seafood. Here, in fact, it will not be difficult to choose among the many fish restaurants that offer you the opportunity to taste fresh fish in every season.
But there are many more unmissable destinations to organize your winter trip to Sicily. We will talk about it in the next article and we will explain even better why Sicily is a perfect destination even in autumn and winter. For the moment, we hope to have intrigued you.
