The island of Vulcano is the most southern of the Aeolian archipelago, and has an area of about 21 square kilometers. Its volcanic activity is given by phenomena solfatara, fumaroles, steam jets.
The main areas of the island are the Vulcano Port and Vulcano Piano. The first, which is crowded due to the presence of an area devoted to the sulfur mud baths; the second, however, is visited for its black sand beaches and tourist facilities close to the sea.
Continuing south-east you get to Vulcanello, peninsula north of Vulcano, which rises to 123 meters above sea level, reached by crossing the isthmus that joins the volcano and forming the two bays of Porto di Levante and Porto di Ponente.
From Porto Levante begins the path that climbs up to the top of the Grand Fossa crater, from which you can admire a splendid panorama. On the opposite side of the island is the small beach of Gelso, accessible both by land and by sea.
Among the various excursions, in addition to the tour of the island, and climb to the crater, you can go south, reaching the picturesque Grotta del Cavallo and the Venus Pool (piscina di Venere). The cave is also known as the Cave of the Hermit and is accessed by three entrances. Inside there are tunnels, lakes, stalactites, stalagmites.
Another suggestive excursion is to the Scoglio delle Sirene which borders the beach of fine black sand; on the left, however, lies the Valley of Monsters.
