Tips

South-eastern Sicily is a land full of warmth, flavors and intense colors, and also thanks to this almost heavenly natural habitat, it lends itself to incredible love stories, romantic adventures and legends that sink their history into the mists of time.

STORIES OF LOVE IN SICILY

We see one of these love stories in Sicilian iconography and in particular in the so-called TESTE DI MORO (moorish heads), ceramic vases depicting the head of a mustachioed Moor and a beautiful Sicilian woman.

It is said that around the year 1100 D.C., during the domination of the Muslims in Sicily, a beautiful young girl from Palermo lived locked up in the house taking care of the plants on her balcony.

One day, she was seen by a young Moor who fell madly in love with her and he declared his love to her.

The two boys indulged in passion but the Moor had a family in the East. When he revealed this news, the girl was seized with anger and decided to take revenge by cutting off his head, which she used as a pot for her basil plant.
In doing so, taking care of the plants on her balcony, the girl continued to take care of her lover. Every day she watered that plant with her tears and making it beautiful.
This thing aroused the envy of the neighbors, who wanted terracotta vases similar to the poor Moor's head.

After so many centuries, the Moor's heads have become elegant pieces of furniture.

In this warm land, theater of passions and love stories, we absolutely recommend some romantic spots in south-eastern Sicily to see with your partner.

THE CATHEDRAL OF SAN GIORGIO IN MODICA

First of all we recommend starting this mini itinerary in Modica Bassa, in one of the many small bars that dot the two main streets (Corso Umberto I and Via Marchesa Tedeschi). Here you can enjoy an excellent pistachio granita, possibly accompanied by the traditional brioche with "tuppo".
Once you have finished your breakfast, you can walk towards via Giuseppe Garibaldi which leads to a beautiful staircase surrounded by Bougainville. From here, climb up to get to the majestic Cathedral of San Giorgio which overlooks the swarming side of the typical houses lit up like a nativity scene.

The view is spectacular and a romantic selfie is a must.
