Villa Romana del Casale - Piazza Armerina

History

The architectural complex, located 5 km from Piazza Armerina is one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the late Roman in Sicily. For this reason, the villa has been recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

Spread over an area of 3,500 sqm, the villa comprises a courtyard entrance, the residential area of representation, the triclinium, and spas. The monument looks like the luxurious residence of Maximilian Herculean, part of the Tetrarchy who ruled the Empire 286-305 AD, to whose patronage are due floor mosaics, perfectly preserved, decorating a large part of the rooms, the largest and most fascinating ever built in Roman times. The subjects draw on the repertoire mythological, hunting scenes, games, sports activities and daily life. Very famous is the mosaic with "women in bikinis", shown during an athletic competition.
